Update: A memorial for Dr. Gary Lopaschuk will be held at Bernard Snell Hall on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 4:30 p.m. .
It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of our dear friend, mentor, and colleague Dr. Gary Lopaschuk on April 2, 2025.
Dr. Lopaschuk was a globally renowned cardiovascular scientist whose groundbreaking research in cardiac energy metabolism established him as a true world leader in the field. His research pioneered the importance of cardiac metabolism showing for the first time that a shift in metabolism could be a driver rather than a consequence of heart disease. While his scientific contributions were extraordinary, they were eclipsed by the everlasting impact he made through his mentorship, collegiality, and unwavering friendship to so many people not only at the 天涯社区, but many other institutions around the world. He loved collaborative research and building teams, and founded the cardiovascular research group. His legacy will carry on through the CVRI leaders he trained. Along with science and mentoring, Gary’s passions included hockey, golf and most of all, his family and loved ones. Gary’s final moments were attending a hockey game with his son, a blessed passing for many of us. The CVRI will honor Gary on its research day on June 6, 2025.
