Engineering Student Projects (ESPs)
Overview
The Engineering Student Projects are student-led research projects that allow students to take the skills and academic knowledge they are learning in the classroom, and apply it to physical research based projects. There are a total of 20 existing projects within the Faculty of Engineering, including a mix of technical and social mission based projects. All projects are multidisciplinary in nature, having members from all disciplines in Engineering as well as members from other faculties across campus including Science, Arts, and Business.
Benefits
There are several benefits to being a part of a student project including, but not limited, to the following:
- Application of coursed based material in a technical or social mission based project.
- Creation of a community both within, and outside the Faculty of Engineering.
- Interfacing with Industry partners/sponsors of these projects, and Faculty/Technical advisors.

Eligibility Requirements
- Any student can participate in an Engineering Student Project, including students who are not in the Faculty of Engineering.
- All Engineering student projects do have to be made up of at least 50% Engineering students, so there might be limitations to students from other faculties in that broader sense.
Recognition + Compensation
- Currently, Engineering Student Projects are completely Not-For-Credit, and are co-curricular in nature.
- There are future initiatives being explored by the Faculty of Engineering to potentially offer credit for students who are taking a large, active role in their respective projects.
Duration, Format + Location
- Most projects operate on a year-to-year cycle, with many competing in their competitions from April-August of every year. Some projects have 2-3 year design cycles depending on the nature of their project.
- There are some remote/hybrid opportunities with the Engineering Student Projects (mainly around software development), however, the vast majority of work being done is in person on the UofA’s North Campus, in one of the Engineering Centered Buildings (i.e Mechanical Engineering (MECE), Engineering Teaching and Learning Complex (ETLC), Electrical and Computer Engineering Research Facility (ECERF) or Natural Resources Engineering Facility (NREF)).
