Our years of leadership in hydrogen research have led to something transformative: the Centre for Hydrogen Innovation, Workforce Development and Outreach.
Backed by decades of hands-on innovation, the centre unites over 60 researchers across the U of A and — in partnership with industry, government and communities — focuses on the entire hydrogen value chain. The task? To accelerate hydrogen technologies, connect policy to practice and train people for a net-zero world.

Our Pillars
Production
From solar-based water splitting to methane pyrolysis, U of A researchers are developing scalable, low-carbon intensity hydrogen.
Transport
Our teams are tackling the challenges of moving hydrogen safely and efficiently — from trucks to pipelines — while protecting infrastructure and the environment.
Storage
Salt caverns, pressurized vessels, advanced materials, ammonia, methanol, liquid hydrogen carriers … all of our scalable solutions for hydrogen storage are designed for long-term reliability and safety.
Utilization
We’re advancing the technologies that put hydrogen to work — from fuel cells to dual-fuel engines — across transportation, power and heavy industry.
Hydrogen Value Chain Enabler
Connecting the entire hydrogen ecosystem, this work focuses on integrating technologies, bridging disciplines and accelerating real-world deployment.
Hydrogen Value Chain Assessment
Through life-cycle analysis, techno-economic modelling and energy system assessment, researchers evaluate the performance, viability and long-term impact of hydrogen solutions — guiding smarter decisions across the value chain.
Workforce Development
From supporting Alberta’s energy workforce through upskilling to co-developing training opportunities with Indigenous and underrepresented communities, we’re developing a dynamic hydrogen talent pipeline.
Outreach
We create tools to engage our communities, increasing public understanding and supporting safe and affordable hydrogen adoption across Canada.
